Sciatic Pain Doesn't Care Where You Live
If you've been dealing with sciatica in Multnomah County, you've probably already tried a few things. Rest. Stretching. Maybe a visit to your doctor or chiropractor.
And yet the pain keeps following you.
The aching, burning, or shooting sensation that travels from your lower back through your hip and down your leg — sometimes all the way to your foot — has a way of making itself impossible to ignore. It shows up when you sit too long, when you stand up, when you try to sleep.
What a lot of people across Multnomah County don't realize is that not all sciatica is the same. Several very different conditions can create that same radiating pattern. Some require medical specialists — orthopedic surgeons, neurologists. Massage therapy isn't the right tool for those.
But one category responds exceptionally well to skilled, targeted bodywork: muscularly-caused sciatic nerve compression. That is exactly what The Sciatica Session is built for.
Serving Multnomah County from Downtown Gresham
The studio is located at 109 N Main Ave., Suite 208-b in downtown Gresham — centrally positioned for clients across East Multnomah County.
If you're coming from Troutdale, Fairview, Wood Village, or anywhere else in the east county, you're closer to this level of clinical care than you might expect. This isn't a spa. It's a private, focused practice built around therapeutic outcomes.
What Is Actually Causing Your Sciatica?
Bone-related changes — arthritis, bone spurs, disc herniation — can compress the sciatic nerve at the spine. So can certain neurological conditions that affect how the nerve itself functions. Both require medical evaluation and are outside the scope of massage therapy.
Muscularly-caused sciatica is different. When tight or overworked muscles create pressure on the sciatic nerve, the pain can be just as intense — but the cause is treatable with skilled, targeted bodywork.
The most common culprit is the piriformis, a small but powerful muscle deep in the gluteal region. When it tightens, it compresses the sciatic nerve running beneath it — or in some people, through it — sending that familiar radiating pain down the leg.
Release the muscle. Remove the tension. Give the nerve room to breathe.
That is the foundation of The Sciatica Session.
the sciatica session
how it works

This session is not a general relaxation massage with extra attention to the lower back. Every step is chosen with a specific outcome in mind: find where the nerve is being compressed, release the tissue creating that compression, and restore comfort and mobility to the regions that have been compensating for it.
Here's how the session unfolds.
Starting with the back
We begin face-down with broad, warming work across the entire back. The lumbar paraspinals, thoracolumbar fascia, and muscles along the spine almost always hold secondary tension in response to the pain pattern. Releasing them first creates the foundation for the deeper work ahead.
From there, attention moves specifically into the lumbar region — working into the multifidus and erector spinae to reduce compression on the vertebral joints and nerve roots.
The gluteal region: where the most significant work happens
The gluteus maximus is addressed first to allow access to the deeper layers beneath it. From there, work focuses on the piriformis and the surrounding hip rotators — the obturator internus, gemelli, and quadratus femoris — using sustained pressure and specific techniques designed to release compression on the sciatic nerve.
This is precise, intentional work. Depth is always calibrated to what the tissue is ready to receive.
Addressing the hamstrings and posterior thigh
When the sciatic nerve is irritated, the hamstrings often tighten protectively along the nerve's path. Releasing them reduces distal tension on the nerve and improves overall leg comfort. Depending on how you're presenting, the calves may be included as well.
Finishing face-up: the hip flexors
The session closes face-up, addressing the psoas and iliacus. These muscles are frequently shortened and pulling the pelvis out of alignment — even when the primary complaint is in the back or hip. Balancing the front of the hip is what allows the back of the hip to stay open after the session ends.
The session finishes with gentle traction and positional release to encourage the lumbar spine to decompress before you get off the table.

Other Massage Services for Sciatica and Back Pain in multnomah county
The Sciatica Session is the most targeted option for nerve compression patterns, but it's not the only way to address back pain and hip tension.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue work reaches the layers of muscle and connective tissue that general massage doesn't access. For people dealing with chronic lumbar tightness, stubborn hip tension, or pain that hasn't responded to lighter work, this is often the right approach.
Therapeutic Massage
Therapeutic massage focuses on specific areas of tension and discomfort while keeping the whole body supported. A good option for people who want targeted relief without the full clinical structure of The Sciatica Session.
Custom Sessions
Every body is different, and every session adjusts to what yours needs that day. If you're unsure which approach is right for your situation, we'll figure it out together before we start.
what to expect in a session
Sessions take place in a quiet, private studio in downtown Gresham. You are properly draped throughout — only the areas being worked on are uncovered.
You can talk through what you're feeling, or stay quiet. You can ask for more pressure or less at any point. You are never expected to push through discomfort.
Sciatica work is most effective when your body feels safe enough to let go. That is the environment every session is built around.
The studio is located at 109 N Main Ave., Suite 208-b in downtown Gresham — easy to reach from Troutdale, Fairview, Wood Village, and other parts of East Multnomah County.
If you've been managing sciatic pain and haven't found relief, the right kind of bodywork can make a real difference. Not by forcing your body to change, but by giving the tissue the targeted attention it hasn't been getting.

FAQs
How do I know if my sciatica is muscular?
A good indicator is whether the pain seems to shift with position, activity, or stress levels. Muscular compression tends to respond to movement and touch. That said, if you have any uncertainty about the cause, consulting with your doctor before booking is always a reasonable step.
Is The Sciatica Session painful?
Deeper work on the piriformis and hip rotators can feel intense in the moment — but it should never feel sharp or wrong. Pressure is always adjusted to what your body is ready to receive. Communication during the session is part of how the work stays effective.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on how long the pattern has been building and how your body responds. Some clients feel significant relief after one session. Most see the best results with consistent care over a few weeks.
Can massage help if I've had sciatica for a long time?
Yes. Chronic patterns take longer to shift, but they do respond to targeted work. Long-standing tension in the piriformis and hip rotators is very much addressable with the right approach.
Do I need a referral?
No referral needed. You can book directly online.
How far is the studio from other parts of Multnomah County?
